The Road

I know you feel you have to, but I guess I wish you wouldn’t

I know you’re free to come and go, but I guess I wish you couldn’t

Is it really the dollars and dimes you collect for your time

Or is it the feeling that you get in your soul when you’re flying..

To the undiscovered places your heart searches for

Something beyond the closing doors

Out there in the rolling spaces unravelling the twine

Back and forth into the grey you say just one more time

Swept into the highs and the highest of your traveling muse

But will the river wash you clean of all that you lose

Or will the regret sink down inside of you

Like the stones you used to pay your dues?

On those plane rides into the big unknown

The hustle your ego craves, your mind thinks is home

Will you ever regret the time that you lost

The faces grow older each time that you’re gone

You ran and you ran and in the end did you know

That what you needed was their sunshine to grow?

A means to an end is how you see it

But those that love you know you’ll never be free of it

I wish you could see what we all know is the end

Passed the opportunity you think you’re creating around your bend

Your worth is right here, in our hearts where it’s grown

But you’re stuck riding shotgun until all the shells are gone

The feeling that you search for will never be seen

It will just be time that is lost in this traveling dream…
