Grief is the deepest kind of sadness
It is reaching out to find nothing
It is talking to the sky
and hoping to find you in the stars
It is looking for a butterfly when I am missing you
or a cardinal swooping low across my path
Grief is regret and doubt and second guessing
It is the closets full of clothes never to be worn again
and your shoes where you last took them off
Grief is all the battles fought
Some won, too many lost
It is begging for a different way
and knowing I could not save you
Grief is praying for mercy and watching you take your last breath
It is hearing the songs play over and over in my head
And saying your name again and again as they carried you out
Grief is all of this
All that hurts
All that changes a person
And all that cannot be changed or undone
And yet also
And above all else
Grief is love
the blood
& the bones
